[majima actually ducked out for a dinner break this evening - fridays are always busy but they're good busy with a lot of regulars tonight, and not many problems. even so, he normally just takes his breaks in his office if at all so leaving-leaving for dinner is a little abnormal.

he double and triple checks on everyone before heading out -- they've all got his number and he technically has a manager who helps him run the place (the guy is very forgettable, but does indeed exist. he just also mostly lets majima do everyone. it works out) so it's not like they're alone or without help. but it's also obvious his heart and his priorities are super somewhere else tonight.

he ends up staying out a little longer than he intended, making conversation with kiryu but makes it back to finish out the shift and then help clean up / stay for people to vent their problems afterwards. he knows how it goes - having to be nice to people all night gets taxing and sometimes you gotta bitch afterwards. he's always happy to listen.

still, though, he doesn't feel that much better after talking to kiryu. it's not something anyone can fix, for all that kiryu's company is always something here's here for. but he did come back and he does intend to do his job, so as he's cleaning up he catches mista and asks]

How'd it go? No problems?

[Mista--here's the thing about Mista: he looks out for his people. Maybe it's ridiculous to think of Majima as one of his, since he's just a boss and Mista's just his employee. But that's what's gotten him in trouble in his past jobs. He can't just not care. He's not capable of it.]

[So when Majima leaves, when his mind is clearly elsewhere and then he's gone for hours and hours, it sticks in the back of Mista's mind. He does his job, of course. That's the difference between this place, which he cares about, and all the other places, that he never did: he wants to do well here. He wants to treat these people right.]

[But after he does his job well, it's still lingering in the back of his mind. And when Majima comes back to the club, Mista notices him immediately. He's not right, somehow. Something's wrong.]

C'mon, boss. You think I'd let something go wrong on your night out?

[The smile he gives is genuine in its good humor, but worried, too. He can't hide that.]

What's up with you?

[the fact that mista cares so much is part of why majima likes him. it's the way he is about people, too, he can't just not care about them. but what it is is strange to have it directed at himself instead of at other people. he's never been great at taking care of himself and having other people worry about him...it always feels foreign, even when it really shouldn't.]

It wasn't a night out.

[he says it like he's a little embarrassed, a feels a little bad for leaving for so long. it wasn't a night on the town it was just...

but then mista asks that follow up question. he wishes he could make it seem less obvious. he wants to be able to take care of his staff, and to him that includes not burdening them with his problems.]

Just got some things on my mind, that's all.

[It was just . . . something. Something went wrong, or has been wrong, or something. Mista isn't that smart, but he's not dumb either. Something's fishy.]

[He sighs and crosses his arms over his chest.]

Look, going out didn't help, so talk to me and see if that helps. Or do something, but--I'm worried about you, man. You're not usually like this. You know I'm not gonna leave it alone, either.

[majima knows mista well enough to know he means it, that he's not going to let it go. and that means it's going to be more of a problem if he says nothing, more of a burden. the easiest thing for both of them is probably to tell him and move on.

majima sighs, too - it's a weird position to be in, but it's easy to see how they got here.]

Thank you, for worrying about me. [that seems like an important place to start.] Ya don't have to do that, I'm just your boss, and... [and it doesn't have to be your problem] It's not something anyone can fix -- today's a, I don't know, callin' it an anniversary seems wrong, I guess but it's an important date. My brother got arrested three years ago, today. He's in for life.

[it's why he'd pulled mista out of that fight to start with, because his bleeding heart can't really take watching kids make the same fucking mistakes he and his brother did. mistakes that had completely ruined his brother's life. he'd give his ten times over if it would undo that. if he could save him.]

[Mista's lip twitches, edging towards a frown; the way his arms are set relaxes, too, but only a little. He wants to say don't thank me, I wouldn't be here if I didn't give a shit-- but there's no time. Then it's moving on to bigger, worse things.]

[His heart sinks.]

Man . . . Come on. Why didn't--

[He sighs, and lets his arms fall to his side.]

You could've told me. Now I feel like a dick for not realizing something was wrong before. I'm sorry, man. That's bullshit.

Nah, don't say that!

[the last thing he wants is for mista to feel bad, that was the whole point -- he was trying to protect him from taking on any extra problems that weren't his own.]

I didn't want to worry ya, is all.

It worries me you don't talk to anybody about it.

[Maybe he's a little hurt, too. He misses having something like a family, and Majima's pretty close to it. He knows that's an unfair to think, but he wishes Majima felt like he could talk about that shit with him.]

Did you talk to Kaz about it? Or just--talk around it.

[ majima gets the distinct sense that he fucked up somehow, but he doesn't know how, when he'd been trying sohard here ]

I mean, I mentioned it ta him, I guess. It wasn't anythin' special.

[Mista gives him a pinched, worried sort of look. Then he throws an arm around Majima's shoulder, his expression serious.]

You don't gotta talk to me. But this thing American guys do where they pretend they don't get upset about shit, it's bullshit. You know I know that.

Talk to somebody. Or worst case I can be distracting. I'm good at that. But I'm good at talking, too.

[majima does listen to what he says. he's pretty reserved. it's not just an american guys thing, it's about responsibility of actions. specifically his own.]

I appreciate the offer. I've never really been great at solvin' problems by talking.
